What wines do I serve with Cheddar, cream cheese and finger foods at an open house?

You can serve any wines, but I generally prefer red wines with cheese. The choice of wine usually depends on the cheese. Strong flavored cheese: red. Mild cheese: Perhaps a white.

Check out Fred McMillin's wine column "On Wine" for specific suggestions:

Since it's an open house, I would strongly suggest having both a red and white wine available (so that you can be sure to please everyone!).  For more details, there's actually a pretty good article on pairing wine and cheese at http://www.cheesecommunity.com/ .  Look in the articles section for cheese and wine pairings.  ;-)

What do you like about wines from Santa Maria Valley and Paso Robles? I lived in both Northern and Southern California until 2004 and I never heard about wines from those areas. Which wines and wineries?
