![]() by Fred McMillin for September 8, 1997 Good Sports, Good Grapes Prologue: The Arcieros, Phil, Frank Sr. And Frank Jr, are partners in the operation of the Arciero Winery...and they certainly are good sports. Phil is an avid world-class hunter and fisherman, with an impressive collection of trophys to prove it. Frank Sr.'s passion is "Indy Car" racing; his driving team has included the greatest...Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, Michael Andretti, et. al. Frank Jr. played professional baseball in the Boston Red Sox farm system, and later won "Driver of the Year" in Off Road Gran Prix competition. The Rest of the Story: These good sports also raise some mighty good grapes on 700 acres of vineyards just east of Paso Robles. Their most widely-planted red (over 100 acres) is Zinfandel...a wise choice since the grape has done well in the area for a hundred years or so. As for critical opinion, author James Halliday feels the Arciero Zin with raspberry-red currant accents is "superb." My tasters agreed. They were happy both with the rich grape flavors, and also with the $12 price...a fine buy.
1994 Estate Bottled Zinfandel, Paso Robles Postscript: In keeping with the vigorous lifestyle of the family, Arciero means "archer" in Italian. The winery logo features a Roman archer. Why the Italian theme? Phil and Frank Sr. were born on the family farm south of Rome where they helped Giovanni, their dad, make wine before they all came to America.
