![]() by Fred McMillin for February 19, 1997 This Is Dan Lee's Cup of Tea Prologue: "Morgan is an excellent winery best known for its consistently good, well-structured and complex Chardonnay." From Prof. John Baxevanis' "The Wine Regions of America." The Rest of The Story: Winemaker Dan Lee developed such a good reputation in Monterey that 15 years ago he set out on his own, creating the Morgan Winery. Sure enough, he immediately scored with his Monterey Chardonnay. and he's still at it. In my last blind tasting his 13th Chardonnay vintage beat out five major competitors. It's not bland melon, but bold and vigorous.. paired nicely with pesto-marinated chicken breast.
1994 Chardonnay, Monterey Rating: RECOMMENDED Postscript: Dan Lee made all these brilliant Chardonnays from purchased grapes. He just advised that he's purchased 63 acres in prime Monterey Chardonnay country.' We'll all be looking forward to what Dan does with his own grapes. They'll help usher in the turn of the century as the first vintage is scheduled for the year 2000.
