California Chardonnays,
1997 vs. 1998

Tessara You are buying a Chardonnay for tonight. Should you purchase a 1997 or one of the newer 1998s? To get an idea, we paired four California 1997s with four, equally-priced 1998s. My Presidio Cafe Panel rated the wrapped bottles and here are the results. The highest-rated wine is listed last.

Winning Vintage Score Price The Chardonnay Wine
4th 1997 81 $16 Mirassou Harvest Reserve, Monterey County
3rd 1997 83 $16 $16 Beringer Napa Valley
2nd 1997 84 $10 $10 Tessara (Seagram) California
1st 1997 87 $30 $30 Guenoc, Guenoc Valley, Cenevive Magoon Vineyard

Comment: No doubt there are 1998 Chardonnays aging in winery cellars that will do very well when released. Meanwhile, tonight I'm buying a '97.
