One Fine Franc—Wow! Drink Now!

Prologue

The best red wines from Washington State have the qualities of a good Bordeaux.

N.Y. Times

Generally, Cabernet Franc is considered too hard and austere to make it on its own. However, Franc made [in Washington] may be an exception, as it shows wonderful fruit intensity. As a result, plantings are increasing and more wineries are producing excellent examples.

Cabernet Franc ripening in Washington.

My panel just tasted one of those "excellent examples." Since it garnered a gold and a silver soon after its 1997 release, I put a bottle in the cellar for a spell. It was time well spent. With an extra year, it came out of the basement mighty silky. Panelist Edgar Vogt wrote, "Wow! Drink now."

Postscript

Washington reds are to be taken seriously. The Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago held a tasting of over 560 U.S.A. reds. Twenty eight percent of the California entries were put in the top category. Washington wines making the top category...31%!
