Best Winery of 2001

It's 140 years later and those winegrowing resources are no longer dormant. Here are our 10 California wineries that did the best job with them in year 2001.

The Top Ten

    10th—Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Napa Valley
    9th—Steele Wines, Lake County
    8th—Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Napa Valley
    7th—Folie à Deux, Napa Valley
    6th—Gary Farrell Wines, Sonoma County
    5th—Beringer Vineyards, Napa Valley
    4th—Beaulieu Vineyard, Napa Valley
    3rd—Grgich Hills Cellars, Napa Valley
    2nd—Robert Mondavi Winery, Napa Valley
    1st—Jarvis, Napa Valley

Comments

* Good Losers—The Napa Valley, propelled by its great Cabs, won eight of the ten top spots. However, there were a number of non-Napas that came very close, including Geyser Peak (Sonoma), Kendall-Jackson (Sonoma), Renaissance (Sierra Foothills) and Sanford (Santa Barbara County).

* The Tchelistcheff Touch—Taught by his dad (the great André), Dimitri Tchelistcheff made the wines that finished third two years ago (see Dec. 31, 1999 WineDay), that finished second last year (see Dec. 29, 2000 WineDay), and that landed the winery in first place this year, JARVIS.
