Makes 1
The Manhattan is making a comeback on the tail of the Martini. It is the quintessential New York City cocktail, a very old drink, a classic from the golden age of cocktails, the late nineteenth century.
2 ounces rye or blended whiskey (such as Jim Beam or Old Overholt)
1/4 to 1 ounce sweet vermouth (depending on taste)
2 or 3 dashes Angostura bitters (or orange bitters if you can find them)
1 maraschino cherry, preferably on its stem
In a mixing glass half-filled with ice cubes, combine all ingredients except the cherry. Stir about 20 times.
Strain into a cocktail (Martini) glass. Let the cherry drop to the bottom of the glass.
