Located on a pineapple plantation in up-country Maui, the Hali'imaile General Store has lured travelers for over a decade with its down-home, island-style cooking. Critics and diners rave about chef Beverly Gannon's rustic, hearty fare, and the restaurant is a Food & Wine and Sunset Editor's Choice of top restaurants in Hawaii and the 1999 winner of Honolulu magazine's coveted Hale 'Aina Award. The Hali'imaile General Store Cookbook allows readers to bring the spirit of Maui and its landmark restaurant into their own kitchens with over 100 recipes, accompanied by Beverly's warm, friendly narrative.
Although the vast majority of visitors to Hawaii believe there is only one season—the proverbial Endless Summer—Beverly hopes to dispel that myth by organizing her tantalizing recipes into spring, summer, fall, and winter menus. with such a bounty of fresh ingredients at her disposal, Beverly is able to make the most of her region's seasonal differences, subtle as they may sometimes seem. Recipes through the seasons include:
Summer Recipes to Cool the Soul
Fall Recipes to Excite the Senses
Winter Recipes to Warm the Heart
With The Hali'imaile General Store Cookbook, Beverly is finally giving all those locals and out-of-towners (including celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, and Alice Cooper) the recipes they've been begging for the past twelve years. True to her hospitable, down-to-earth style, Beverly hopes that "every single copy gets food-stained, dog-eared, and, most of all, enjoyed!"
Beverly Gannon worked as a road manager for entertainers Liza Minelli and Ben Vereen before she decided to embark on a culinary career. After Le Cordon Bleu and classes with Jacques Pépin and Marcella Hazan, Beverly settled in Maui with her husband Joe and their three daughters and began a successful catering company. Beverly and Joe opened the Hali'imaile General Store in 1988 and Joe's Bar & Grill in 1995.
Bonnie Friedman is the owner of Grapevine Productions, a Maui public relations firm, and a writer.
