Newman's Own Cookbook

By Paul Newman and A.E. Hotchner

Newman's Own Cookbook
"And he asked himself—Good Lord, what have we unleashed?" ...Paul Newman

"I have been asked many times how Paul Newman, who knows a great deal about acting but very little about business, and I, a writer who knows even less, became tycoons—and in the food business yet, as competitive and cutthroat an industry as you can find on Dun & Bradstreet. The answer is: We did everything wrong."...A.E. Hotchner

For years, Paul Newman and his long-time friend A.E. Hotchner filled old wine bottles with homemade salad dressing and gave it to their friends for Christmas. Today, more than 216,262,680 bottles later, Newman's Own Salad Dressing and other food products sold worldwide by Newman's Own, Inc. have earned more than $100 million in after-tax profits, profits promptly given to educational and charitable causes from Cystic Fibrosis and the American Foundation for MDS to the Yale University drama school and the Hope Rural School in Indiantown, Florida.

For Newman's Own Cookbook, Newman and Hotchner have teamed up in the kitchen again, this time gathering recipes near and dear to their hearts. Here are dishes from Newman's family and friends as well as winners of the Newman's Own Good Housekeeping contest. And like all of Newman's professional culinary efforts, his proceeds from Newman's Own Cookbook will got to The Hole in the Wall Gang Fund, which supports The Hole in the Wall Camps for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Newman's Own Cookbook includes recipes Robert Redford's Lamb Chili with Black Beans; Nicole Kidman's Crispy Orechiette with Broccoli, Pine Nuts and Garlic; David Copperfield's Spicy Penne with Fontina Cheese; Harry Belafonte's Pork, Apple, and Yam Salad with Honey Mustard Dressing; Martha Stewart's Chicken Cataplana; Danny Aiello's New York Strip Steak with Cherokee Indian Curry AAA Steak Sauce, and Sarah Jessica Parker's Grilled Shrimp with Vodka-Lime Sauce.

Joanne Woodward reveals the secrets of her Sole Cabernet, Zucchini Bread, and much-celebrated Breakfast Cereal. Nell Newman stirs a pot of her renowned Chicken Soup and Melissa Newman, her Minestrone. Housekeeper Caroline Murphy, contributes her Southern-Fried Chicken, Tuna Salad, and Ham Hocks and Beans, dishes she has placed often on the Newman table. Newman himself instructs how to make a Newmanburger, toss his illustrious Caesar Salad, cream spinach, and compose a Fettuccini Alfredo a la Newman, among others. Recipes from the Newman's Own/Good Housekeeping Contest include Pit Stop Pot Roast, Butch's Wild West Tex-Mex Salad, Cassidy's Chicken Curry, Sackarooni Orange Kiss-Me Cake, and The Hudsucker Pasta.

Newman's Own Cookbook is full of great dishes for every meal throughout the year—appetizers and salads; soups, stews, and chilis; main dishes from grilled meats to meatless entrees; pasta, pizza and rice; vegetables and side dishes; and desserts. And in between great eats, Newman's Own Cookbook tells the story of an amazing company founded by a "couple of bumbling amateurs trying to fish with no bait in a sea of sharks." Fifteen years on, these "bumbling amateurs" continue to give away every cent of profit—more than $100 million in 6,008 gifts to date—from a little office in Westport, Connecticut still furnished with Newman's poolside furniture. To their everlasting amazement, they now run a virtual food empire—from a desk with a beach umbrella over it.
