Whether they're enjoyed with family, friends, or your one-and-only soul mate, breakfasts can be the shared communions of relationships.
Forget the Pop Tarts and doughnuts. I'm talking about true meal-sharing, quietly beginning the day with loved ones— before the intrusions of television, phone calls, and daily tasks interfere. Right now, you may be spending time with persons you see only rarely, or you may be miles away from those you care for. But food being a gift of love, take some time to either share a heart-felt breakfast with those around you, or enjoy such a meal with pleasant thoughts of those far away.
Quiet breakfast, you say? Have you ever seen the noise my brood makes? Not to worry. Get everyone into the breakfast act together. Give them tasks and don't fret if the meal doesn't turn out perfect. It's the time spent together that counts. Enjoy each other.
You may want to use up some of that leftover Thanksgiving meal, with a lavish turkey hash or other Luscious Leftovers recipes. But if you're looking for something more special to make from scratch, try these dishes I've collected below.
Serve the Bacon, Eggs and Cheddar Scones hot from the oven with steaming Earl Grey Tea. The Cinnamon Swirl Coffee Cake, Blueberry-Sauced Beignets, or Peanut Butter Waffles and a strong hot pot of java will sweeten anyone up—even those who rise on the wrong side of the bed.
Sweets are treats, but savory is my preference. For the ultimate quick and easy breakfast, baked in a pie pan in the oven, try a version of Mama's Dutch Babies. Toss the bagels out but keep the smoked salmon—you'll need it for these luscious Cornmeal Waffles or Crepes. And for those who savor salsa, my Latin American breakfasts include classic Mexican Migas and spicy homemade Chorizo con Papas.
Wake up those sleepyheads, fire up the teapot or kick in the Capresso machine—a special breakfast is calling.
