Don't look like a putz by using a poor quality wine opener for your wine and cheese party. Forget broken corks, chunks of floating debris and jagged foil cuts by using the Screwpull Lever Model LX (sounds like a luxury car doesn't it?). I've used the plastic Screwpull models in the past, and let's face it: plastic is plastic and it breaks—but not this solid metal model. One swing of the handle and the Teflon coated screw effortlessly twists through the cork, then pull the handle back to release the cork. Easy as pie - even for computer-junkie, carpel-tunnel-plagued wine lovers like me.
It comes with a foil cutter that really works, and I recommend getting the special stand to hold the Screwpull Lever—without it, the opener can be cumbersome and looks like a Medieval torture device when resting idly on your counter.
The lever is shown in several positions in the time-lapse photo accompanying this column. The foil cutter is shown on the bottom right.
Made by Le Creuset, the Screwpull Lever Model LX bears a suggested retail price of $140 and the stand goes for $35 (new hi-tech patterned models cost $180). Available in most better department stores and cookware stores. Put this on your wine-loving Santa's list! (Why do you think his nose is so red anyway?)
