You don't have to be a football maniac to be batty for bowls right now. Sure, January marks the zenith of the football season—bowl games from Hawaii to Miami blast across the airwaves, culminating in the ultimate arena of pigskin prowess, the Super Bowl. But January's also a month when friends and family warm up over comforting bowls of chile con carnes, soups, and stews, or munch and crunch with salty chips and big bowls of salsas and dips.
This month, I kick-off mealtimes with hearty bowls of food perfect for sporty celebrations or just great one-pot meals. Start by checking out my past foodie coverage of Superbowls XXX, XXXI, and XXXII below—they're packed with plenty of festive fare (just in time for January 4's Fiesta Bowl College Championship in Tempe, also site of the previous 1996 Super Bowl.) For 1999, I've teamed up my Southwestern and Fiesta menus with a cooling bowl of Creamy Avocado-Green Chile Dip and a zesty Fire-Roasted Salsa, the hottest bowl of the week.
