Making Halloween Chocolate Treats

Boo! Welcome to the October, 1998 edition of I Love Chocolate.

As usual, this column and its recipes evolved into one about Halloween and party treats. This is a great time of year for getting your kids involved in cooking, and some of these chocolate recipes are ideal for small helpers. Let's get cooking!

Chocolate Find of the Month:

I Love Chocolate October's Chocolate Find is Best of Luck. October is a time for imagination and creativity, and Best of Luck makes shortbread—chocolate, classic, and ginger—in wonderful horseshoe and "nail" shapes (hey, you need something to keep the shoes on a horse). Best of Luck also makes solid chocolates in horseshoe shapes, but these, too, show imagination; the chocolates come in dark, milk, and white, but the white, for example, has a bit of lemon zest added, while the dark chocolate contains roasted pecans. Most importantly, the chocolate used is of good quality. The shortbread or chocolates would be a bit different for holiday entertaining or presents (especially if there's a horse fan in your life), and I can't think of a nicer gift to wish someone well, whether they're taking exams, having a baby, or riding an entry in the Kentucky Derby.

You can find Best of Luck products in a limited number of retail locations, but they're easiest to get through mail order. Call (540) 364-2622 (ask for Maggi), or write them at: Best of Luck, Hunt Country Foods, Inc., P.O. Box 876, Middleburg, VA 20118. Give them a try.

The Chocolate Show is coming!!!!

Are you ready? November 27 through December 1, 1998, from 11 am to 8 pm each day (except to 10 pm on Saturday, November 28), The Chocolate Show will be at The Puck Building, 293 Lafayette St. (corner of Houston St.) in New York City. Chefs and chocolatiers already signed up for seminars or demonstrations include: Jacques Torres, Rose Levy Berenbaum, Flo Braker, Colette Peters, Carole Bloom, Dorie Greenspan, Francois Payard, Elaine Gonzalez, Robert Linxe, and Nick Malgieri.

Yes, you'll be able to purchase chocolates there--from the likes of Valrhona, Scharffen Berger, Li-Lac, Godiva, and Perugina--and you can place orders for holiday gifts as well. There will also be cookbook signings, tasting booths, interactive exhibits, music, and high-fashion dresses made of chocolate (no, I'm not making that up). Bring the whole family! Admission price is ten dollars per person, five dollars for children under 12 or for culinary students with ID's. I'll be there on some days, too, so come up and say hello if you see me! For more information on the show, you can call 1-(212)-695-2475.

'Til next month,
Yours in chocolate,

Stephanie
