Hi! My name is Stephanie Zonis, and welcome to the June (Father's Day), 1999 edition of "I Love Chocolate." My Dad is a combination of general fixer-upper, financial wizard, master of driving directions, and appreciator of desserts, and I'd like to thank him for all of his support and advice over the years. Since my Father is fond of good ice cream, that's what the column is about this month; making your own ice cream, or using a good-quality brand for some easier-to-fix treats. Happy Father's Day to my Dad—and yours!
Product Note:
If your intake of fat is restricted, please pay attention to the nutritional information for any sorbet you eat. People think all sorbets are fat-free, but that isn't true. Most fruit-flavor sorbets are low fat (or nonfat), but non-fruit sorbets (such as chocolate) can contain a substantial amount, depending on the manufacturer. Always check the carton label.
Hey, it's summer—time for ice cream! How about some really good stuff? Double Rainbow Gourmet Ice Creams, Inc. is happy to oblige. This San Francisco-based company is beginning to achieve wider distribution in the US, and I, for one, am very glad of it. When was the last time you had a good mint chip ice cream? Bet it's been a while. If so, head for a pint of Double Rainbow. Theirs is smooth and creamy, with no unnecessary artificial green coloring, just a clean mint taste and good chocolate bits. Try the Marion Blackberry Sorbet, intensely flavored and not too sweet. Or how about White Pistachio & Chocolate, featuring both flavors side-by-side in the same carton? The cappuccino chocolate crunch is filled with a crunchy candy that reminds me of a childhood favorite; "It's A Goody" features vanilla ice cream with a peanut butter swirl and chocolate chips.
If you live in California or Albuquerque, NM, Double Rainbow may have an ice cream parlor near you. If you cannot find their products locally, the company may be able to ship you some. To find out details, call Double Rainbow at (800) 489-3580. Note that this company does not yet have a website. Try some of this ice cream--you'll be back for more!
I Love Chocolate wants YOU!!! Do you have a comment, question, or suggestion? How about a recent chocolate "find" you'd like to share? You can contact me at: sdziadwm@[email-address-removed]; I'd like your input on this column. Thanks!
'Til next month,
Yours in chocolate,
Stephanie
