The Saga of The Joy

The gossip behind the scenes is that the revamped Joy of Cooking is so far overdue that perhaps too many so-called experts were called in to contribute. Meanwhile, the biography of the women who wrote the original Joy of Cooking is out, and "Stand Facing the Stove" (Henry Holt & Co.) is full of spice. Did you know that neither the mother nor the daughter, Irma Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker, were trained cooks? and that Mrs. Rombauer self-published the original book after her husband's suicide? She sold it—and all rights—to Bobbs Merrill, causing legal battles for years to follow. The grandson, Ethen Becker, is involved in the new Joy of Cooking, which industry insiders say is still far from hitting the stands. As big fans of the classic volume, we wonder if the new version will ever capture the charm and personality of the original.

So, Who Could Tell?

Just how often does Starbucks taste its premium coffee? It seems they've been one of the victims in a $75 million scam, along with Hills Bros. And Peet's Coffee in the Bay area. A supplier of the more expensive Kona coffee allegedly substituted cheaper beans from Panama and Costa Rica—for the last three years. The Starbucks spokesperson stated these beans were used in blends and bought only in "minuscule amounts." Maybe that explains why no one noticed the difference in quality. Then again, maybe it doesn't. How many people can really tell their Konas from their Cubanos?
