A Note on Commercial Frozen Desserts

by Stephanie Zonis

I don't know about you, but I tend to eat more ice cream during the summer than I do throughout the rest of the year. I don't always make my own, but I do always demand good quality in my frozen desserts, and I hope you do, too. We all know that frozen desserts are less-than-perfect, nutritionally speaking, but if I'm going to eat a food that is low in nutritional value, it's going to be the best I can find! Yes, those are more expensive, but you get what you pay for, so why not go for better quality? There really are differences.

The following is a highly subjective list of some of the frozen desserts I especially like, in no particular order:

[NOTE: This list was compiled in 1998. Contact info may have changed.]

Ciao Bella Gelato Company. Over 85 flavors of gelato, sorbet, and frozen yogurt! Their hazelnut gelato is good enough to make me imagine I'm back in Italy again. Not easy to find, but definitely worth searching for. Website: www.ciaobellagelato.com.

Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc. Is there anyone in America who hasn't heard of this company by now? Over thirty flavors of ice cream, 6 low fat ice creams, 6 frozen yogurts, 7 sorbets, and several ice cream novelties. Great product names, great ice cream. Website: www.benjerry.com.

Haagen-Dazs. An impressive selection of ice creams, frozen yogurts, sorbets, and ice cream novelties. Consistently good-to-excellent products. Website: www.haagen-dazs.com.

Starbucks. 7 flavors of ice cream (dig that Java Chip!), 2 low fat ice creams, and three types of frozen bars. For a company that started off in the beverage business, they've done a good job of expanding their line--but they need to market their ice creams in pints, too. No website for the ice cream, but call them toll-free at 1-800-558-7328.

Sharon's Sorbet. Ten flavors of sorbet, including chocolate, coffee, and coconut, as well as the fruit flavors you'd expect. Their raspberry is intensely flavored, and has a good sweet-tart balance. Website: www.sharons-sorbet.com.

Monterey Sorbet. Black raspberry sorbet? Believe it--and theirs is so good I almost finished the carton in one sitting. They make sorbet, "lite" sorbet, and sorbet-yogurt combinations. No website; all I could discover is that these products are distributed by a company in Princeton, NJ.

Friuli Sorbet. Baked apple sorbet is a product unique to Friuli (as far as they know); they have eight other flavors, too, including tangerine and chocolate. Their raspberry is not too sweet, with a clean, true fruit flavor that's most refreshing. No website, but you can reach them toll-free at 1-800-232-7438.
