Mother's Day...the traditional Sunday breakfast in bed, with fresh juice, a red rose and a bundle of warm, cuddly hugs. We've discovered a new book that is filled with recipes for sweet and savory treats that are good year-round. In "Scones, Muffins & Tea Cakes," edited by Heidi Cusick (HarperCollins), we especially like the assortment of Mother's Day breads and sandwiches that are simple enough for kids and dad to make together. And a bonus part of any breadbasket is the aroma that fills the whole house with its enticing warmth. When Mom smells these jewels baking, it will be hard to keep her out of the kitchen—but please do try! Afterall, this is her designated day and your chance to openly show her all the love you have for her. (And by the way, with such romantic photographs and recipes, we think the book itself would make a lovely gift instead of the usual Mother's Day card—just try to keep the batter off of it when you're making the recipes!)
Happy Mothers Day to all!
Serves 8 to 10
Bouquets of purple and yellow irises, lace-trimmed napkins, a basket of strawberries and an assortment of pastries begin the celebratory day. Children are encouraged to participate in the preparations. Let the young ones assemble sandwiches and spoon marmalade into serving dishes. The older ones can slice the quick bread, whip the cream, and take the scones out of the oven.
With their homemade cards in hand, the children parade into mom's boudoir with the first berry-topped scone and cup of coffee on a tray. If she loves breakfast in bed, serve the complete menu on a tray. Invite the whole family to fete mom, or at least eight to ten people with a cause to celebrate any special occasion on a lovely spring morning. with fewer celebrants, leftovers will keep you going for days.
