Winery Notes:
Merlot has been part of the Matanzas Creek portfolio since 1978, and, through consistent refinement and maturation, has come to challenge Chardonnay as the winery's most coveted wine. Time and again, critics in America and abroad have called it America's finest, and it continues to win medals in international wine competitions against the great wines of the world.
Matanzas Creek's ten acres of estate vineyard, planted to an exceptional clone of Merlot, represent the heart of Matanzas Creek's Merlot wines. Combined with an additional 1.5 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (used in the blending of Matanzas Creek's Merlot wines), this acreage consistently produces fruit of outstanding quality.
The ultimate goal of the Matanzas Creek Merlot program is to consistently produce rich, opulent, full-bodied Merlot wines, that are both age-worthy and replete with supple tannins. In its youth, Matanzas Creek Merlot bursts with intense fruit characteristics, yet maintains a soft and approachable tannin structure. As it ages, secondary characteristics of chocolate, tobacco, spice and vanilla surface, coalescing in a complex, well-rounded wine that can be enjoyed for up to fifteen years.
