Anthony Dias Blue Tasting Notes:
The first of two extraordinary Zins from the 1996 vintage. The Fanucchi is dense and rich with amazing spice including hints of cinnamon, mace and pepper. The wine is fat, lush, deep and long in the mouth.
Winery Notes:
The vines from which this great wine are created were originally planted in 1906 on the Russian River Valley's tiny Wood Bench Road. The wine has an intensity that only ancient vines can yield. For centuries, famous wine regions of the world have built their reputations on old vineyards such as this one.
Peter Fanucchi started learning and practicing viticulture in the Russian River Valley in 1972. In 1984, with a plan to tear out the old Zinfandel vines from whence this wine is created, his Tuscan father passed away. It was at this point that Peter decided to personally reinvigorate each of the old plants; from utilizing rootzone stimulating organic materials to gently traning new, more photosynthetically efficient vine arms.
Over ten years later, the successful quest continues. Sadly, even with recent appreciation of this legacy, economics and mechanization are still quickly bulldozing vineyards originally plowed by horse. By enjoying his wine with your meal today, you are helping to preserve the Russian River Valley Zinfandel legacy into the 21st Century.
