An Ode to Olives

Review by Debbie Mazo

Olives have been a traditional staple in the Mediterranean diet for centuries. Across the Atlantic, it's only recently that the olive's attributes have been explored beyond adorning a pepperoni takeout special. From the history of olives to delicious recipes, An Ode to Olives shares all the secrets surrounding this ancient delicacy.

Quick-loading and easy-to-use, this site pays homage to everything olives (the background color is even, you guessed it, olive green). Join in the worship by visiting the All About Olives section where you can find out about everything from curing homegrown olives to making olive oil. Or, test your knowledge on the varieties of olives being cured today.

Go Beyond Black and Green walks you past the shelves of your supermarket to the shores of the Mediterranean where you can find specialty olives like Picholine (slender, full-flavored green olives from the south of France) and Gaeta (plump, dark purple Italian olives with very tender, almost melt-away, texture).

The Recipes using Olives section includes a nice variety of recipes featuring this small, noble fruit. If you've always dreamed of making the perfect martini, you'll discover that gin stored in the freezer adds the right touch. Or, sample the Mideastern selection of recipes such as Moroccan Brisket with Olives or Chicken with Vinegar Sauce, Olives, Raisins and Garlic. There's also a number of variations on an olive favorite, tapenade.

If you want more, there's always Books about Olives where you can browse through the collection. This section lists a number of popular cookbooks celebrating the wonders of olives and olive oil. With this rich assortment of information at your fingertips, you'll be a devotee of the sacred olive branch in no time.
