Chanukah On the Nethttp://www.holidays.net/chanukah/Review by Debbie Mazo
Chanukah is a holiday full of historic customs, each with a special significance. One ritual central to the observance of Chanukah involves lighting candles each night in a menorah or eight-branch candelabra with a ninth, elevated branch known as a shamash. At Chanukah On the Net, you can find out more about the menorah including how the shamash is lit first and then is used to light the other candles. Click on the virtual animated menorah, and you can see how it's really done.
Just like Christmas, Chanukah includes food traditions that are observed around the world. A traditional dish of Eastern Europe, potato pancakes or Latkes are cooked in oil, a symbolic link to over 2000 years ago when a candle in the temple burned for eight days with only enough oil for one. At Chanukah On the Net, you can sample a recipe for latkes prepared with grated potatoes and onions and served with sour cream or applesauce. Or, whip up a batch of Chanukah Dreidel Cookies flavored with Brazil nuts and oranges. To complete your visit, share your memories of the season by sending one of the site's holiday greeting cards to your friends and family. Full of enlightening suggestions for celebrating this year's Festival of Lights, Chanukah On the Net is guaranteed to enrich your holiday experience during the eight days of Chanukah.
