Festivals & Feasts

The Germans are still adapting to the new order of life allowed by the unification of East & West Germany. The sense of formality and predilection for conformity and punctuality still pervade the culture, but the beer and wine of the festivals easily unleash a more relaxed, carefree and convivial atmosphere.

Here are some key festivals where food plays a larger than usual role:

September

Moselle Wine Festival

  • in Bernkastel-Kues, a village near Trier and 70 miles west of Mainz
  • first week in September
  • Special attraction: the town's fountain spews the famous Moselle wine
  • over 5000 vintners participate

Durkheim Sausage & Wine Festival

  • at the Bad Durkheim Sausage Market, 20 miles west of Mannheim
  • held on St. Michael's Day, this feast of sausages, bread and local wines dates back to the 15th Century when pilgrims were honored
  • in the 2nd and 3rd weekends of September

Oktoberfest

  • in Munich (Munchen)
  • Begins in September and continues through October
